Horizon Academy West Charter School is a tuition-free public school, available to students in kindergarten through 6th grade. At Horizon, the focus is on students’ academic achievement and their individual development. We are an innovative learning community that enriches the quality of children’s lives and prepares them for the academic challenges of a changing world. We are dedicated to providing students with an academic and social foundation for their continual growth as lifelong learners through a combination of rigorous instruction in the core content areas, and an appreciation of our cultural diversity.
Our goal is for our students to be able to listen and think critically, read effectively and widely, clearly express themselves, use current technology to access information and inspire individual creativity, and appreciate and respect others as citizens of the world.
At Horizon Academy West we align our work and efforts with three broad organizing principles. We believe that our children and community will be best served through the development of academic rigor, healthy sustained relationships, and the wise use of resources. All Board, Administrative, and School Goals are developed with these unifying beliefs in mind.
Our school builds on parental involvement, where parents are encouraged to participate in classroom and school activities. We are an involved community of children, parents, and teachers.
Key Accomplishments during the 2007-2008 Academic year:
Implemented 4-day School Week schedule with over 83% buy-in from parents and staff
Completed two successful Family Literacy projects
Participated in Walk Across America campaign
Students participate in yearly community based projects
