WELCOME

Thank you for visiting the home of the Office of Family & Community Engagement (FCE).

Among the guiding principles of the Office is to recognize parents and community members as co-educators, and to align the school’s and the community resources to support the development of students in areas required to be successful in and out of school.

The chief objective of the Office is to organize and restructure the home-school connection so that parents and teachers become effective teams and, under a shared commitment to diversity, parents and educators each renew their commitment to maintaining a school that treats each student, parent, and Horizon employee with respect, dignity, and sensitivity to their unique needs and culture.

The Office of Family & Community Engagement
utilizes “promising” practices in:

So, whether it’s helping boys and girls talk about their anger and frustration, connecting a child with a mentor or CYFD where there is no protective adult in the home, encouraging poor families to save when extra money comes their way or insisting that students attend school regularly, the Office of Family and Community Engagement upholds the high expectations of the school and provides the support for kids and families to get there.

Partners

Organizations and institutions trust Horizon Academy West as an extension of their organization. Many of our “partners” have utilized discovery visits to get acquainted with our programming. These initial visits provide information that often results in establishing a connection between the organization and our school. These visits also help to identify mutual interest and determine the possibility of future involvement and investment.

Sometimes the contribution the sponsor is willing to make is not in the form of money and, in our opinion, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. The truth is, whenever there’s an economic downturn, the first budget line that is often reduced or cut entirely is the philanthropic line. With this understanding of the drivers in the marketplace, we decide very carefully who we would like to partner with to ensure an outcome that takes into account the vital interest of students, faculty, the community and the organizations that choose to partner with us.

This repositioning of resources, if you will, enables private enterprise to develop a relationship with our school to create a mutual benefit. Did you know corporate giving, cash, and in-kind giving exceeded $17 thousand in school year 2008, a 37 percent increase from the prior year?

The central point of this discussion is that corporations have discovered the marketing power behind philanthropic partnerships but they also want to work with well-managed, progressive institutions such as Horizon Academy West that demonstrate accountability and add benefit to their corporations.

We are indebted to those organizations who have had a direct impact on the following community programs:
